When North Shore Bank introduced a weekly Jeans Day program the organization wasn’t really too sure what to expect. After all, banks are not typically known for their informality and this would certainly be a departure. However, with a goal of raising funds for area non-profits employees were allowed to wear jeans to work each Friday in exchange for a $5 contribution. These proceeds would then be pooled for the month and donated to an area charity chosen by employees. One year into the program, the results have been dramatic.

For the past twenty-seven years, between September and December, all third-graders from Peabody’s elementary schools visit the place of George Peabody’s birth to learn about their city’s namesake and his philanthropic ventures. After their tour, the children are asked to write an essay on what they have learned. The top three are chosen and displayed in all the schools throughout the remaining school year.

Recently, North Shore Bank presented the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress (MDSC) with a check for $1,080 from the Jeans Day proceeds collected during September. The mission of the MDSC is to enhance on a continuous basis the lives of individuals with Down syndrome through the education and support of self-advocates, their families, their friends, their teachers, their health care providers, and the community as a whole.

North Shore Bank recently made a $20,000 commitment to Beverly Bootstraps and their “Building Community. Together.” Capital Campaign. The campaign is the first ever capital campaign for the organization and has been extremely successful in raising funds for the purchase and renovation of a new building. North Shore Bank’s total commitment will be paid over a five-year period.
