PEABODY, MA — ( — According to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, as of October 2016 there were 3,751 families in the Massachusetts Emergency Assistance Shelter Program. Recognizing a need, especially around the holidays, for the past ten years Debby Marticio has been serving Thanksgiving Day meals to those who are less fortunate, homeless, or maybe just don’t have a place to go for the holiday

Marticio, or Ma Duke as she’s known to family and friends, along with 300 volunteers serve over 2,000 delicious home cooked meals each Thanksgiving. With a menu consisting of honey baked ham, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and a variety of casseroles and other side dishes, approximately 300 people are served at the Disciples UCC (formerly the First Church of Danvers) on Center Street in Danvers. The rest of the meals are delivered to elderly and veteran homes around the area.

Recently, Jodi Houghton, the Sales and Service Manager of North Shore Bank’s Danvers Branch visited Ma Duke to deliver a $1,000 check to help defray the dinner costs.

Houghton said:

“We just think it’s a great what Debby does for the community, and we wanted to be a part of it.” She went on to say, “Our Jeans Day program is set up for exactly this purpose, to help the less fortunate in the cities and towns that we serve.”

The Bank’s Jeans Day program allows the staff to wear jeans each Friday in exchange for a $5 donation. At the end of the month the funds are collected, pooled together and then donated to a local charity chosen by the employees.

Marticio said of North Shore Bank’s donation:

“We are so thankful for the support of North Shore Bank and its employees. It is so special to see a community come together to help make one day a little better for so many people.” She continued, “Without these types of donations it would be very difficult to provide our meal each year.”
