When North Shore Bank introduced a weekly Jeans Day program the organization wasn’t really too sure what to expect. After all, banks are not typically known for their informality and this would certainly be a departure. However, with a goal of raising funds for area non-profits employees were allowed to wear jeans to work each Friday in exchange for a $5 contribution. These proceeds would then be pooled for the month and donated to an area charity chosen by employees. One year into the program, the results have been dramatic.
Reflecting on the effort, North Shore Bank President and COO, Kevin Tierney, related:
“Jeans Day has certainly exceeded our expectations and it’s proven to be a wonderful morale builder for our employees.” He went on to state, “Whether suggesting potential recipients, collecting contributions or just raising awareness with our customers, it’s heartening to see their commitment to the community and how they’ve taken ownership of the program — participation rates have been high throughout the bank and the dollars raised speaks to this fact.”
Over the past year the program has raised more than $16,000 with proceeds going to organizations such as Peabody’s Haven From Hunger, Aaron’s Presents of Andover, Operation Troop Support, the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress, PALS Animal Life Savers, Citizens for Adequate Housing, the Middleton Art Association, The Friends of Dane Street Playground in Beverly, and the Bridge House Family Shelter in Lynn.
In the fall of 2015, after North Shore Bank’s merger with Merrimac Savings Bank was completed, employees chose to nominate two organizations in the Merrimac area for as their Jeans Day recipients – the Newton, New Hampshire Food Bank and the Merrimac Senior Center and Council on Aging.
John Meserve, formerly President of Merrimac Savings Bank conveyed:
“As a former resident of Merrimac and current resident of Newton, New Hampshire, it makes me happy that our employees decided to raise money for these organizations. They both have such incredible reputations in our area and have consistently done so much for the members of our community.”
Heading into its second year the good news for area non-profits is that the program will continue indefinitely. With an ever expanding list of area non-profits recipients and an enthusiastic, denim-clad employee-base, Friday Jeans Days are here to stay at North Shore Bank.
