Annual Saugusbank Scholarship Awarded to College-Bound SHS Graduates

Saugus, MA ( – To mark the 25th year of its scholarship program, Saugusbank President & CEO, Kevin Tierney, recently awarded $2,000 grants to two Saugus High School graduates.  This year’s recipients were Emily Covell and Brianna Cole who both achieved academic excellence at Saugus High School.  Ms. Covell was the Graduation Valedictorian and will be attending Gordon College in September, where she will be studying Social Work and Sociology.  Ms. Cole will be attending the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst where she will be majoring in Marketing.

Since its inception in 1987, Saugusbank has awarded over $75,000 through the Saugus High School Scholarship.  Award recipients are chosen by a committee of bank employees and are based on a combination of criteria, including academic achievement.

President & CEO Tierney summarized the bank’s motivation behind the scholarship when he stated:

“There is little question that for most families, college financing is the next biggest expenditure after their home.  While Saugusbank recognized this in the 1980s, I don’t think that anyone could have foreseen the escalation of costs over these past twenty-five years.  As a result, it’s extremely heartening to know, particularly in this challenging economy, that we can provide this type of direct assistance to hard-working and deserving students.”
