North Shore Bank Sponsors George Peabody Essay Contest
Over 500 third graders from all Peabody schools visited the museum between September and December 2007. During their visit the students learned about George Peabody and the leather industry of Peabody. Drawing from the information they learned from their visit, they were asked to write essays about George Peabody. This year, the students were asked to answer the question: George Peabody was a great philanthropist who used money to build schools, libraries and museums. If you were a philanthropist like George Peabody, what would you do to help the world? Each third grade teacher selected two essays from their class to be submitted as finalist and a panel of judges chose the top three winners. Mary Lou DaSilva of North Shore Bank, who has judged the contest for the past several years, stated “North Shore Bank is proud to once again be the official sponsor of this great event. Each year the essays get better and better, and it’s harder for us to pick a winner.” This year’s winners and prizes are as follows: First prize - Sean Mullins, $100 savings account, Second prize Alexander Iatrou, $50 savings account, Third prize Makenzie Hery, $25 savings account. Among the dignitaries on hand at the award ceremony were David LaFlamme, president of North Shore Bank, Mayor Michael Bonfanti, Director of Community Development Jean Delios and Superintendent of Schools Dr. C. Milton Burnett. Mayor Bonfanti noted that just as George Peabody was committed to his community, so is North Shore Bank who steps up to help whenever asked. Mr. LaFlamme stated, “We’re so proud of all the children who participated in this contest, as well as the teachers and parents who are committed to improving education in our community. It is our pleasure to sponsor this event each year.” The Bank is a member of the FDIC and a member of the SIF, and is an Equal Housing Lender.
